7. Why Jubbly?

A few years ago I noticed that Local rally star Steve Bannister called his Escort rally car Ethel, and I believe that the current incarnation of his car is Edith. So I thought that my little project deserved a name.

The problem is what do you call a rally mini? A few names went through my head (some of them unprintable). My cousin Janet called her first mini Trundles (I liked that), and my stepfather Tom called his car Mona (for no apparent reason), and I wondered about resurrecting one of these names. But I thought that it should be something a little more personal, and a name that has remained in my head for many years was the nickname that I was given in the early days at Halls Garage, and stuck with me until the garage
was sold in 1984.

Our garage premises in Tadcaster were situated next to a newsagent, and during the summer months when the weather was warm I used to get sent to the shop to buy ice cold drinks and frozen ‘ice pops’ (remember them?) for the guys in the workshop. One of the iced drinks that were sold were large frozen triangles in varying flavours, and these were called ‘Jubbly’. I must have been sent for hundreds of these over the years, and somehow the name stuck. Even now if I see some of the mechanics
they still call me Jubbly (or Jubb) and daft as it seems I still answer to it

So, the car was called Jubbly, a reminder of an earlier age that I suppose I am trying to recreate as I approach my mid 50's
